Join BayNet for a tour of a unique California institution — the Library and Archives at the Western Railway Museum in Suisun City, CA, 12 miles from Highway 80 along Highway 12 in Solano County.
More than just a train museum, the Western Railway Museum documents the key place that transportation plays in our lives. The scope of the collections at the F. M. Smith Memorial Library goes well beyond transportation and features extensive photographic and historical documentation of Bay Area municipal history.
The Western Railway Museum is fortunate to have an outstanding collection of the original car cards used in streetcar advertising. Sources for our collection include cards that came with the cars, from the operating companies, private collections, and the files of Fielder, Sorenson and Davis Advertising of San Francisco. The Museum also boasts an impressive collection of Maps and Photographs that detail locations of the bay area that no longer exist due to fire, earthquake or other geographic changes.
After the library tour, visitors have the option of experiencing the Museum’s “Large Artifact Collection” on their own and riding the restored interurban electric train loop at 12:30pm (ride lasts 50 minutes), and upon returning, you can self-tour the car barn and see the immaculately refurbished streetcars, electrical equipment, and historical ephemera celebrating the history of transportation in the western United States. Train Ride Costs $10 extra and tickets can be purchased on site.
The Facility has a small snackbar but lunch is not provided. Suggestions include bringing a picnic lunch or eating at a restaurant locally in nearby Suisun city.

(The Museum is a stand-alone area that is right off Highway 12 between Rio Vista and Suisun. Look for the large Train Depot and large picnic Area next to the Train Barn. The Library is inside the Depot.)
