JOB: Middle School Social Studies/Librarian Position, Oakland Hebrew Day School, Oakland

Unique Educator Librarian position with a strong emphasis on teaching information literacy and 21st century skills through social studies content learning. This educator librarian will manage a K-8 library, build excitement about reading throughout the grades, host regular class library visits, work closely with colleagues to facilitate student research and teach two levels of middle school social studies with a focus on building student skills in primary and secondary source reading, research, note-taking, writing, presentation and discussion. Library Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and provide information literacy instruction in collaboration with Oakland Hebrew Day School (OHDS) faculty
  • Provide digital citizenship instruction in collaboration with OHDS faculty based on Common Sense Media curricula
  • Benchmark library curriculum with school, ALA, NETS-S and Common Core standards
  • Market library services and programs to students, parents and faculty
  • Manage budget and all fundraising programs including annual book fair, birthday book program
  • Develop and maintain a collection of over 11,000 print and electronic items, including subscription databases, periodicals, and books in English and Hebrew
  • Share expertise by presenting at faculty and parent meetings
  • Maintain Library website
  • Build and maintain library units and lessons
  • Catalog library materials
  • Supervise student and community volunteers
  • Perform circulation desk duties, readers’ advisory and reference services for students and faculty
  • Participate in school curriculum development by attending middle school and general studies weekly meetings
  • Maintain a library environment that is attractive, inviting, and conducive to learning; monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior
  • Participate in professional activities, organizations, conferences and committees for both the library and educational communities
  • Keep current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to the library program
  • Take an active part in the life of the school community
  • Promote the library through contests, book displays, clubs, etc

Middle School Social Studies Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with General Studies Director to design and implement CCS aligned social studies units that emphasize depth of learning and focus on developing essential skills in reading, research, writing and discussion
  • Act as lead social studies teacher for two levels of social studies (approximately two 42 minute periods per day)
  • Facilitate the research process to support student learning of general knowledge and interest-driven topics
  • Facilitate regular inquiry-based discussions in response to primary source materials and current events
  • Guide and support students to effectively and appropriately use social media platforms to support academic learning
  • Guide and support students to use variety of digital presentation formats to present what they have learned
  • Maintain records and report on student progress.

Education/Experience:
MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program.
Previous experience equivalent to three full academic years as a professional librarian and/or classroom teacher
