The San José Public Library System (SJPL) invites applications for the position of Children’s Material Selector. A Children’s Material Selector Librarian I/II performs professional librarian duties including selection of materials for purchase in various formats such as print, media, and eBooks. The successful candidate will have experience with tracking large budgets in a competent manner using Microsoft Excel or other tracking tools, working with frontline and backroom staff around collection development and maintenance issues, and meeting deadlines. The ability to prioritize and work independently is vital. Knowledge of Children’s literature and trends in education, such as STEM and STEAM is highly desirable. Additionally, knowledge and experience with cataloging or Technical Services is considered a plus. This position will also be responsible for performing a variety of professional librarian duties, which may include providing direction assistance to library customers in the location of information and library materials; service as a resource for children, young adults, adults and library staff; working with community groups to promote understanding; use and support of library service activities; analyzing, interpreting and answering reference questions; and leading or training the work of a clerical and technical staff as assigned. This position may include evenings or weekends.
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to:
Education – A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university.
Experience – Librarian I – None; Librarian II, Minimum one year of full-time professional library experience.
