JOB: Librarian I list for Berkeley Public Library, Berkeley, CA

The Berkeley Public Library is seeking qualified and energetic candidates for our Librarian series in Adult Services (Reference, Art & Music) with potential opportunities in other service areas.
Note: This recruitment will create an eligible list that will be used to fill future temporary and or career positions within the next 12 months.
Librarian I is the entry level class in the professional librarian series. Initially under close supervision, incumbent performs professional library work involving reference services, library collection development, cataloging, services for children and youth or other special services.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a college or university with a Master’s degree in Library Science. Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college coursework on a year-for-year basis.

A valid California driver`s license is desirable. When driving on City business, the incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver’s license as well as a satisfactory driving record. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.

Knowledge of: Public library objectives, organization and procedures; patron advisory methods and practices; reference sources and search techniques; automated library information systems and tools; collection development, including book and materials selection and cataloging procedures.

Ability to: Assess library patron needs and provide accurate reference information; plan and implement specialized programs, including performing outreach work; classify, catalog and process a wide range of books and library materials using both manual and computerized procedures; establish and maintain effective working relations with a variety of library patrons and others contacted in the course of the work; maintain accurate records and files; prepare clear, accurate and concise written reports and correspondence; and prepare effective displays and other visual materials.
