California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) is an internationally-recognized leader in integral education. The CIIS Laurance S. Rockefeller Library, along with branch library, the Shuji Goto Library at our ACTCM campus location, offers an extensive collection and provides reference and instructional services to both residential and distance-learning students. Its catalog and circulation system are available through KOHA, an open-source Integrated Library System.
Calling upon a significant level of technical and bibliographic and research expertise, the Cataloging and Reference Librarian assumes primary responsibility for overall completeness, accuracy, and currency of collection records and for the congruence between online records and the library’s collection. Working closely with the Systems Librarian and with the Electronic Resources and Serials Manager, this person shares responsibility for currency, accuracy, and completeness of collection data in our integrated library system (Koha) and of electronic serials holdings records (Serials Solutions). The Cataloging and Reference Librarian also manages technical processing and repair of materials for Library collections and has primary responsibility for weeding and de-accessioning projects. They will also assist with processing of course reserves and will be an active member of the Reference Team, providing individual and group research assistance to library users.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Responsible for original, complex and copy cataloging of materials in all formats including electronic books. Reviews and implements new workflows as technologies change.
* Assures consonance between bibliographic records and library holdings. May coordinate inventory, shelf-reading, and/or barcoding projects. Weeds the collection, identifying materials in need of repair, candidates for de-acquisition, and candidates for special collections.
* Troubleshoots cataloging problems and catalog/circulation systems as required. Anticipates related problems and proposes solutions as appropriate.
* Documents cataloging and technical services policies, procedures, and statistics as needed; prepares reports on cataloging and collection maintenance activities.
* Supervises preparation of Library materials for reader use. Trains and oversees student workers in book preparation, repair, and related tasks.
* May assume other library technical service functions related to acquisitions, and/or collection development and maintenance.
Reference & Reserves
* Organizes and manages academic reserve collections?paper and digital.
* Reference: individual research assistance per week?in person, online, on the phone and by email.
* Instruction: in collaboration with all Reference team members for in-class instruction or orientations.
* Instructional content design: creating LibGuides, FAQs, handouts, demo videos and other informational and training materials.
* Collection development: as liaison, and as a part of the Library team efforts.
* Promote usage of Library resources.
Other Areas of Responsibility
* Acquisitions of books and A/V materials in all formats, for collection development and course reserves.
* As needed, assists patrons at Circulation Desk with locating materials and in related matters.
* Participates in staff meetings, planning and problem solving meetings, and special projects; in general works as a member of the Library team.
* Staying current with advances and concepts in applicable library fields.
* Taking trainings and courses on product changes, technical advancements, new concepts as needed.
* Advising colleagues and the director on developments in libraries, and making recommendations for library actionable items when appropriate.
* A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS/MLS/MSIS) from an American Library Association accredited Library School
* Two years of cataloging and reference services experience in an academic library setting
* Proficiency with copy cataloging materials (from OCLC) in all formats including electronic resources; ability to create and edit bibliographic records in OCLC and in a local integrated system
* Facility with cataloging electronic book collections and other digital resources (e.g., EBSCO, Oxford University Press, ProQuest EBook Central, Alexander Street Press)
* Knowledge of MARC format (including MARC and RDA)
* Ability to batch edit MARC records using tools such as MarcEdit or OpenRefine
* Ability to apply Library of Congress MARC classification tables, authorities and subject headings, AACR2R, and Library of Congress Rule Interpretations
* Proven expertise with original cataloging of books and other material formats (e.g., audio, video, and/or digital collections)
* Experience providing individual and group research assistance to library users
* Experience with vendor relations: to manage Library accounts, and for technical support
* Prior responsibility for library acquisition and collection development activities
* Familiarity with (including ability to troubleshoot) the following applications and products: OCLC Connexion, LC Classification Web, MARCEdit, LC Cataloger’s Desktop, and RDA Toolkit
* Familiarity with open-source library applications (especially Koha ILS) and/or with archival and special collections would be advantageous
* Knowledge of non-MARC metadata standards, such as Dublin Core, MODS, METS or EAD and experience with digital object management
* Knowledge of SQL in order to write or repurpose reports in Koha ILS
* Experience with library instruction
* Experience creating digital learning objects such as LibGuides, training videos, handouts
* Experience with the writing, review and editing of library procedures and policies
* Supervisory experience, preferably managing student workers
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary commensurate with skills and experience.
Range: 51,500 – 56,500 Yearly
