About the Branch Division
Neighborhoods in San Francisco are distinct, unique and diverse in character. From the diverse, dynamic, and rapidly changing neighborhoods in the southern part of the city, including new housing and development in the Bayview, Potrero Hill, and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods to Pacific Heights, with its sweeping views of Golden Gate Valley, each part of the city features unique, appealing and welcoming architecture, open space, parks, shopping and more. In 2014, the Library completed a renewal of the branch library system, renovating 16 neighborhood libraries and building 8 new facilities. In 2017, the Library added an additional permanent day of service at 9 branch libraries. All of San Francisco’s 27 branch libraries are now open seven days a week, with a minimum of 50 hours of library service per location each week. In 2018, the Library announced plans to renovate the Mission Branch Library which opened in 1915 and is one of seven branch libraries funded by Andrew Carnegie. The Branch Division prides itself on reaching out to connect with the diverse population of San Francisco through its outreach, public programming, and partnerships.

Position Description
Under the direction of the Chief of Branches (COB), District Manager coordinates operations and services within the branch division, including supervision of branches and Branch Managers. Each District Manager within the branch division is responsible for one of the five geographical library districts in the City.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:
• Represents the COB to other City departments and to units and divisions in the Library system;
• Participates in and leads system-wide committees, teams, and task forces; schedules, trains, supervises, and evaluates subordinate staff;
• Attends public meetings in order to respond to questions from library users and other members of the community;
• Represents the Library and initiates outreach to the community
• Promotes clear communications and courteous cooperation throughout the workplace;
• Communicates Library and City policies and procedures;
• Plans work assignments and work schedules;
• Prepares budget proposals; writes work reports and personnel evaluations;
• Works with others to develop policies, improve service and resolve programs;
• Serves as Acting Chief of Branches when needed; and
• Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Desirable Qualifications:
– Leadership and management skills to run the geographical district.
– Knowledge of supervisory/management practices and principles.
– Good community outreach skills, including willingness and ability to work effectively with formal and informal organizations in the neighborhoods of the geographical district.
–  Ability to plan, assign, direct and evaluate personnel.
– Excellent written, oral communication, interpersonal, facilitation, and creative problem-solving skills.
– Ability to develop and put into effect new procedures and policies.
– Ability to work courteously and effectively with a varied and diverse population of library staff and patrons.
– Ability to promote and model teamwork and excellent customer service.
– Ability to be flexible in a changing profession and work environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Possession of a Master’s Degree in library and information studies (e.g. MLS/MLIS) from a college or university program accredited by the American Library Association; AND

2. Four (4) years of experience as a professional librarian, including at least two (2) years supervising other professional librarians.
