JOB: Library Technician, Samuel Merritt University, Oakland

Job Summary

This position provides staff coverage of the library’s circulation and service desk in the evenings and on weekends. The incumbent will work as a team member to provide excellent, proactive customer service.

Patron Services 90%
• Use the library automated systems to charge out library materials, process patron records, determine materials status, locate resources within the system, arrange for transfers of library materials, place holds, register new patrons, and perform additional procedures as needed
• Provide routine reference and referral services in the absence of a reference librarian
• Assist patrons in using the library catalog, electronic journals and databases, and equipment
• Maintain photocopy machines with supplies of paper and toner, and assist patrons with equipment malfunctions

Miscellaneous 10%
• Maintain a neat, functional and safe library environment
• Survey the library public areas at the end of each work shift and report any anomalies or unusual occurrences to the full-time library staff
• May assist in other areas of library operations as required

Skills and Abilities

• Familiarity with library policies and procedures
• Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public
• Must have excellent communication skills and ability to work with diverse groups of people
• Good problem solving skills
• Effective troubleshooting with computers, copiers and printers
• Excellent literacy skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multicultural, multidisciplinary team

Education/Experience

• High school diploma or general education (GED)
• Library experience and/or training, preferably community college level or higher

Physical Requirements

• Ability to communicate using the spoken word
• Ability to hear verbal communication
• Ability to move about to accomplish tasks in the library
• Physical ability lift 25 pounds, carry, push, pull, climb, bend, kneel and stoop
• Ability to sit for prolonged periods at desk
• Ability to use computer screen and keyboard
