JOB TITLE: Remote Library Tech Consultant/Cataloging Volunteer


JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Niebyl-Proctor Marxist Library for Social Research aims to preserve
the history of the working class by maintaining an accessible
library/archive, organizing classes and discussions, and providing
community space and resources to promote critical thinking. We are
inclusive, independent, nonsectarian, anti-capitalist and committed to
democratic ideals.
We are in the midst of cataloging our collection of over 13,000 books,
and need a volunteer trained in systems/tech library work. Training will
be provided to those interested in acquiring cataloging and metadata
skills. Since the onset of COVID-19, we have been cataloging books
remotely, meeting weekly through video conferencing software.
As a tech consultant, you will help with:


* tech troubleshooting — requires familiarity with an ILS (preferably
Koha), command line, Apache web server.

*troubleshooting with indexing, z39.50 support, and module configuration between ILS and hosting services. Additional experience working with web hosting configuration and communication with third party technology organizations (in this case May First Movement Technology, though other experience would also be helpful) will be noted, including experience with communication around shared documentation drives and hosted email support. 
* configuring settings for the processing/printing of barcodes/spine
labels (this will resume when in person meetings are possible)
* copy cataloging
* various administrative projects including fundraising, recruitment,
and outreach
* Some physical labor, including carrying books, moving boxes, shelving, re-shelving, and shifting may be required. If you are otherwise interested and unable to perform these tasks, please let us know so we can accommodate you.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The following qualifications are recommended
– Familiarity with Windows OS, wireless networking, command line,
other tech support as needed
– Previous experience with an ILS, preferably Koha
– Knowledge of AACR2 and RDA cataloging guidelines
– Familiarity with creating and editing bibliographic records in MARC
21 format
– Knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system and
subject headings
– Subject matter expertise in any of the following: Marxism, anticapitalism, anti-colonialism, communism, the Labor and Peace
movements, liberation movements, etc.


HOURS: Initial schedule will be 4-6 hours on Saturdays. When it’s
possible to meet in person, we will discuss possible changes to the
schedule.
