Position Description

The Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Library at San José State University (SJSU) welcomes applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position as a Research Impact Librarian.

Collaborating with a team of liaison librarians and the Division of Research & Innovation, and under the general guidance of the Faculty Director for Collections and Scholarly Communications, the Research Impact Librarian will develop services and programs to support campus-wide initiatives on identifying, understanding, measuring, visualizing, and reporting of research impact and outcomes. The Research Impact Librarian will also support faculty, staff, and students in assigned liaison departments. Librarians at SJSU are faculty who are expected to engage in library and university governance and scholarship, which are requirements for tenure and promotion.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library is a unique partnership between San José State University (SJSU) and the City of San José, which opened in August 2003. It is the first library in the United States to integrate the services and collections of a major university and public library system. Located in downtown San José, the King Library is an impressive 475,000 square feet with nine floors of collections, collaborative work spaces, meeting rooms, exhibit areas, and unique resources dedicated to lifelong learning for all to enjoy – for free. The building serves as the SJSU library, the main library for San José Public Library system, and as a cornerstone for the entire community. Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree by the time of hire
  • Coursework and/or experience with using tools that help to track and measure the impact of research and scholarship
  • Coursework and/or experience in delivering information literacy instruction and reference service
  • Evidence of potential to maintain an ongoing agenda in scholarly research and professional development at appropriate levels
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population, as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:    

  • One or more years experience in supporting scholarly communications initiatives, including assessing impact of research, scholarly, and creative activities outcomes
  • Experience with designing, implementing, and assessing library programs and services
  • Coursework and/or experience in data analysis, data visualization, or experience working with bibliographic and bibliometric data
  • Experience in academic libraries
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree or equivalent training/work experience in STEM fields

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement support services related to scholarly dissemination, research impact, grant reporting, rankings, and unique scholarly identifiers
  • Assist researchers with developing strategies for managing or tracking publications, maintaining an impactful online identity, measuring or assessing research impact by discipline, and communicating research impact to diverse audiences
  • Perform advanced bibliometric analyses to provide researchers and administrators with an in-depth understanding of scholarly productivity and emerging indicators of research impact
  • Apply knowledge of the diversity of research, scholarly, and creative activities outputs to provide discipline-specific impact information
  • Remain conversant with evolving models of scholarly communication, open access, open science, institutional repositories, and other trends in information science to inform assessment of impact and reach
  • Participate in the library liaison program to provide tailored services to one or more academic departments
  • Participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments
  • Build a record of progressive scholarly and professional achievement to fulfill the University requirement of retention, tenure, and promotion
  • Demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement
