DEPARTMENT OVERVIEWAt the California Digital Library (CDL), we believe that the library, in all its forms, enables and advances the critical work of students, scholars and the public. As a University of California systemwide library, CDL provides services to and on behalf of the UC system as a partner and collaborator to the UC campus libraries. As a globally-connected digital library, CDL occupies a unique position between the local UC campuses and the global digital library infrastructure. The user base for CDL services and programs includes UC faculty, students and library staff; the patrons of the consortia in which the UC Libraries participate; and the many people worldwide who benefit from UC’s open access offerings.The CDL is a unit within the UC Office of the President, has a staff of 75+ and is located in downtown Oakland. The CDL supports remote work and U.S. based applicants who wish to work remotely will be considered. This position is not available for sponsorship.

POSITION SUMMARYThe Systemwide Data Analyst plays an important role in advancing and supporting data-driven assessment, planning and decision-making at the University of California (UC) Libraries, which comprises the ten UC campuses, two Regional Library Facilities and the California Digital Library (CDL). As a member of the Systemwide Library Planning team at CDL, the Systemwide Data Analyst will co-design and provide a data analytics and visualization service for the UC Libraries utilizing data stored and originating in the Systemwide Integrated Library System (SILS) as well as a wide variety of additional public and proprietary data sources. This service will support the work of systemwide leadership and planning (e.g. the UC Council of University Librarians) across a broad range of topics and areas of shared interest; it will also support campus-specific understanding of systemwide data. The analyst will perform and communicate complex data analyses to support library planning, proposal development and transformation broadly, and will partner and collaborate with the SILS governance structure and operations center, and with assessment, data and analytics coordinators at CDL and across the system.

Responsibilities60%Data Collection, Analysis, Research and Reporting: Develops and implements a systemwide analytics service to gather, normalize, integrate and analyze a wide range of datasets from multiple sources and to develop aggregated reports and data outputs (e.g. summaries, visualizations). Creates and implements a plan to sustainably collect and maintain data for ongoing collection, use and analysis. Provides complex analyses across a range of services and topics of interest to the UC Libraries leadership and CDL. Utilizes as well as promotes the use of the Systemwide Integrated Library System (also referred to as the SILS, currently Ex Libris’ Alma and Primo VE) for systemwide analysis and reporting. Recommends new reporting and/or analytics approaches informed by stakeholder requirements and emerging areas of shared interest. Analyzes, synthesizes and visualizes data and other information for stakeholder-driven reporting and communication, including in the annual UC Budget for Current Operations, UC Libraries annual systemwide statistics, accountability reports and other outputs.20%Collaborative Projects & Partnerships: Collaborates with systemwide and campus partners and stakeholders to define analytic goals, parameters and expected outcomes (for services and projects). Works collaboratively with UC colleagues, including the SILS governance structure and operations center, and library staff working on assessment, data and analytics at CDL and across the ten campuses. Supports campus partners on local data gathering and campus-specific analytics. Presents findings verbally and in writing. Participates in and/or leads CDL and UC Libraries systemwide task forces in applicable work/analysis areas.10%Communication & Consultation: Communicates relevant findings to appropriate audiences and gathers feedback to iterate and improve data analysis and visualization outputs, as well as the analytics service generally.10%Project Documentation: Documents specifications and methodologies for extracting and manipulating data, and prepares final documentation for dissemination.

Required QualificationsExcellent qualitative and quantitative analytical skills to develop, assess and synthesize information from multiple sources on a broad range of issues; ability to identify issues and the appropriate data sources and/or methodologies to address them, evaluate alternatives and draw conclusions relating to policy or practice.Experience applying methodologies and tools for computer-based data analysis and manipulation, including the ability to design and evaluate tools and methods for data capture and normalization.Demonstrated ability to produce reports for easy interpretation and use, and to design and prepare graphs, tables and other visuals. Experience with data visualization tools and techniques.Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to articulate ideas, thoughts and information in a logical manner and with your audience’s needs and goals in mind; ability to summarize complex issues clearly and succinctly.Strong interpersonal and customer service skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.Self-motivated and able to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team. Able to consistently meet deadlines.

Preferred QualificationsExperience with and applied knowledge of library systems, collections, services and practices.

EducationBachelor’s degree in related area and minimum three years of experience and / or equivalent experience / training.License/CertificationsCertificate or advanced degree in data analysis, library and information science, or a related discipline. (Preferred)
