Cuesta College Library/Information Technology Courses for Fall 2017

Hello Colleagues: 

August is right around the corner, so now is the time to register for Cuesta’s Fall 2017 (begins August 21) term of  Library/Information Technology (LIBT) courses. Find class offerings and descriptions below. Be sure to enroll in the Intro course (LIBT 201) which begins the program sequence and is only offered in the Fall semester.  

Library/Information Technology courses from Cuesta College are not just an excellent way to prepare future library support staff.  They are also excellent ways for current staff to refresh their knowledge, or to gain new skills.  Because all courses are online, they are available to anyone with an Internet connection, and are a perfect fit for people with busy work and family lives.

Fall 2017 Cuesta Library/Information Technology Classes   

All courses are fully online.  Full-semester courses meet 8/21 – 12/22. 

LIBT 201 – Introduction to Library Services  (3 units) ONLY OFFERED IN FALL  
Surveys the history, organization, services, personnel and functions of libraries and information centers. Provides beginning library/information technology students with an introduction and overview to the field and identifies job opportunities. Must also be enrolled in the following course: 

DIST 101 – Introduction To Online   (.5 unit)    meets 8/21 – 9/08 
Introduces students to the different types of technologies utilized in a distance education course. Students will determine if distance education is right for them and learn academic and technological skills for success in distance education and technology mediated courses. 

LIBT 204 – Organizing Information (3 units) 
A practical introduction to the tasks involved with cataloging book and nonbook library materials. Includes descriptive cataloging using AACR2, subject cataloging, and classification. Covers MARC formats as well as their use in the OCLC bibliographic utility and local automated library systems. 

LIBT 207 – Web Page Development (3 units) 
Designed to prepare students to understand XHTML and the steps necessary to the effective design and development of a web site. All elements of web page design will be covered including such topics as content, navigation and aesthetics. 

LIBT 208 – Library Teamwork and Supervisory Skills  (1 unit)   meets 10/23 – 12/22 
Introduces teamwork and supervisory skills within the context of a library department or branch. Covers how to train, motivate, counsel and evaluate employees, time management, delegation of work, preparation of memos and statistical reports. 

LIBT 209 – Library Public Services   (3 units) 
Surveys library services provided to the public–including the philosophy, policies and procedures associated with reference/information and circulation services. Emphasizes skill building in defining and executing search strategies. 

LIBT 210 – School Library Services  (3 units) 
Explores the role of the school library media program in the educational community.  Provides students with basic skills and competencies necessary to deliver effective school library media programs for grades K-12. 

LIBT 212 – Research Skills (1 unit)  meets 10/23 – 12/22 
An information literacy course for students wishing to improve their research skills. 

LIBT 213 – Advanced Internet Searching  (1 unit)  meets 10/23 – 12/22 
Focuses on advanced search techniques, strategies, and concepts to locate a variety of information resources for personal and academic needs. Students will learn how to formulate effective search queries, select appropriate information resources, and retrieve and evaluate information from these resources. 

LIBT 220 – Fundamentals of CSS  (1 unit)   meets 10/23 – 12/22 
Introduces the fundamentals of CSS for the Web Page Developer. The essential elements such as selectors, positioning, floating, and vertical alignment, tables, and other topics will be explored.

The following Library/Information Technology classes are being offered Online at Cuesta College starting January 17:

LIBT 205 – Lib/Information Center Collections   (3 units)
Provides an overview of how to select, purchase, and organize print, electronic, and other materials to stock library/information center collections.

LIBT 207 – Web Page Development  (3 units)
Designed to prepare students to understand XHTML and the steps necessary to the effective design and development of a web site.

LIBT 212 – Research Skills   (1 unit; 2 sections available: one meets 1/17-3/17, the other meets 3/20 – 5/19)
An information literacy course for students wishing to improve their research skills.

LIBT 213 – Advanced Internet Searching   (1 unit, meets 3/20-5/19)
Focuses on advanced search techniques, strategies, and concepts to locate a variety of information resources for personal and academic needs.

LIBT 215 – Technology In The Workplace   (3 units)
This course offers a practical look at proper approaches and techniques used to understand, utilize and troubleshoot workplace technology.

LIBT 217 – Ethics in the Information Age    (1 unit, meets 3/20-5/19)
Focuses on ethical and legal issues of information access and publishing as applicable to the Internet.

LIBT 218 – Adolescent Literature   (3 units)
Explores the literature and electronic resources essential for library technicians to work effectively with adolescents in the information age.
